This scheme's intentions are good but in the long run the results will be horrible.This will drive up the price of healthcare for everybody and one point it won't be affordable and long waiting time to see the doctors.
Now hospitals are given incentive(in terms of payment thru' this scheme)to treat poor patients.Private hospitals will be more than happy to do that because they will get lot of money.This will lead to lot of malpractices like over charging the govt for the treatments that is not necessary.
When people pay from their pocket, they will be very careful about how to spend their money.They will ask about all the treatments and the cost.Now,when govt is paying, people won't care and the hospitals don't care either.
So if this scheme expands, hospitals will completely focus on this patients and milk the money from govt.The hospitals will raise the fees for other people who don't get coverage under this scheme.They will end up paying more money.
This scheme is nothing but socialism in action.Robbing from one group of people and giving it to other group(poor patients and hospitals).
Well, now you can ask what about those poor people?
I totally understand we can't let those people die in the streets.
The government needs to fix it's already running hospitals and increase the number of doctors thru opening more medical colleges.
This way when there are lot of doctors,the fee charged by them will decrease due to competition and even poor people can afford to go to private doctor and pay on their own.
For catastrophy events like accident,surgery,they can buy some sort of insurance.
Govt run Healthcare schemes like this were done in lot of western countries like US,UK and the results are horrible.In US,to visit a doctor you need to pay $350 and still you need to wait for two weeks to get an appointment to consult a doctor.
Why is that? Because doctors are busy treating the govt sponsored patients and billing the government for the treatments they did not do.
Atleast now in India, we don't have a situation like that.But schemes like this which start out very well but will definitely lead to destruction.
